Sydney Newman, the creator of the show, disappeared shortly after the first episode aired. When questioned, the production crew recalled odd habits such as a distrust of pepper pots, a propensity for bowties, and a tendency to mutter to himself about things that, when confronted, he would say were ideas for the show. Several years later, Verity Lambert came forward with the statement that he had two hearts, but this has never been confirmed.
